Stephen - Martyr for God

May 27, 2026 | The Movement - A Study in Acts by Byron McWilliams
Day 1: The Cost of Courageous Faith

Reading: Acts 7:54-60

Devotional:

Stephen faced the ultimate test of faith—death itself—yet he stood firm. His courage wasn't rooted in his own strength but in being "full of the Holy Spirit." When we honor God authentically, we may face opposition, criticism, or rejection. The question isn't whether challenges will come, but whether we'll stand firm when they do.

Stephen's example teaches us that true courage comes from fixing our eyes on Jesus rather than our circumstances. When the stones flew, Stephen saw heaven opened and Jesus standing ready to receive him. Today, ask yourself: What fear is holding me back from bold obedience? Remember, God doesn't always remove us from trials, but He always provides the courage to face them. Your faithfulness in small moments prepares you for greater tests ahead.

Day 2: The Power of Forgiveness

Reading: Luke 23:32-34; Acts 7:60

Devotional:

"Lord, do not hold this sin against them." These words, echoing Jesus' prayer from the cross, reveal the transformative power of Christ in Stephen's heart. Forgiveness isn't natural—it's supernatural. It's evidence that Jesus is truly Lord of our lives.

Who have you been unwilling to forgive? Perhaps someone wounded you deeply, and bitterness has taken root. Stephen shows us that forgiveness isn't about minimizing the offense or waiting until we feel like it. It's a choice to release others from the debt they owe us, trusting God as the righteous judge.

Unforgiveness imprisons us, not them. It poisons our relationships, steals our peace, and hinders our prayers. Today, identify one person you need to forgive. Pray specifically for them, asking God to bless them. This isn't weakness—it's Christlikeness. When we forgive as we've been forgiven, we break chains and experience the freedom Jesus died to give us.

Day 3: Ready for Eternity

Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:1-10; Philippians 1:21-24

Devotional:

"For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain." Paul's words capture the paradox of Christian living—fully engaged in this life while longing for the next. Stephen embodied this truth. He didn't seek death, but he was ready for it because he knew where he was going.

Are you ready to meet Jesus today? This isn't a morbid question but a clarifying one. When we live ready to die, we live with eternal perspective. We invest in what matters, forgive quickly, love deeply, and share the gospel urgently.

Stephen "fell asleep"—a beautiful picture of peaceful transition from this life to the next. For believers, death isn't an ending but a beginning. It's closing your eyes here and opening them in the presence of Jesus. Examine your life today. Are you living for temporary pleasures or eternal treasures? Make the adjustments necessary to live with no regrets, ready to hear "Well done, good and faithful servant."

Day 4: God's Purposes in Our Pain

Reading: Romans 8:28-39; Acts 8:1-4

Devotional:

Why would God allow Stephen to die so young? This question haunts us when tragedy strikes. Yet God's ways transcend our understanding. Stephen's death, which seemed like Satan's victory, became the catalyst for the gospel's spread throughout the world.

The persecution that followed scattered believers, and they carried the gospel message like embers on the wind. What Satan meant for evil, God used for exponential good. Your pain has purpose, even when you can't see it. The illness, the loss, the betrayal—God wastes nothing in the lives of His children.

David Brainerd died at 29, feeling like a failure, yet his diary influenced missionaries for two centuries. Your faithfulness in suffering preaches a sermon words cannot capture. Others are watching how you respond to trials. Will bitterness or trust define your story? Trust that God is weaving your pain into a tapestry of redemption that may not be fully revealed until eternity.

Day 5: A Life That Echoes for Eternity

Reading: John 15:13; 2 Timothy 4:6-8

Devotional:

Stephen's life was brief but his impact eternal. For 2,000 years, his story has inspired believers to stand firm in faith. This raises a profound question: What legacy are you creating? Will your life echo into eternity?

Legacy isn't about fame or accomplishments—it's about faithfulness. It's about surrendering fully to Christ and allowing Him to work through you. Stephen was simply doing what God called him to do: serving tables, preaching truth, and honoring Jesus with his final breath.

Your "ordinary" faithfulness may have extraordinary impact you'll never see this side of heaven. The student you mentor, the neighbor you serve, the coworker you pray for—these seeds may bear fruit for generations. Live today like it matters for eternity, because it does. Surrender your plans to God's purposes. Serve wholeheartedly where He's placed you. Speak truth boldly when He opens doors. Your life, wholly surrendered to Christ, can echo God's glory long after you're gone. The question is: Will you let Him use you?
