Prayer for Boldness

March 16, 2026 | The Movement - A Study in Acts by Byron McWilliams
    Day 1: You Are Master

    Reading: Daniel 11:32; Psalm 2:1-12

Devotional: The early church began their prayer by acknowledging God as "Sovereign Lord"—their absolute master and ruler. They didn't approach God casually, but with deep reverence, recognizing His complete authority over their lives. Today, we must ask ourselves: Is Jesus truly our master? The proof isn't in our words but in our obedience. When God commands something through His Word, do we follow through, or do we rationalize our way around it? Those who know their God will stand firm and take action. True boldness comes from surrendering completely to His lordship. This week, identify one area where you've been resisting God's authority and choose obedience. Remember, if you can't call Him master, you cannot truly call Him Lord.

    Day 2: You Are Creator

    Reading: Job 12:7-10; Genesis 1:1-31

Devotional: Every breath you draw is a gift from the Creator. The early church understood that God made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and everything in them. This acknowledgment wasn't merely theological—it was personal and intimate. When we recognize God as Creator, we understand that our very existence depends on Him. Just as our bodies need food for fuel and our cars need gasoline, our spiritual lives require constant refueling through prayer and God's Word. Yet how often do we neglect this essential spiritual nourishment? Today, pause and thank God for the breath in your lungs. Recognize that every heartbeat is evidence of His sustaining power. Let this awareness drive you to deeper dependence on Him throughout your day.

    Day 3: You Are Author

    Reading: 2 Timothy 3:16-17; Psalm 119:105

Devotional: The early church prayed Scripture back to God, acknowledging Him as the divine Author who spoke through human instruments by the Holy Spirit. God's Word isn't merely ancient wisdom—it's living, active, and personally relevant to your situation today. When we know Scripture deeply, our prayers transform from selfish wish-lists into powerful conversations aligned with God's will. The apostles could stand boldly before murderous authorities because they knew what God had said. How well do you know your God through His Word? This week, don't just read the Bible like a newspaper. Sit under its authority. Let it examine you. Memorize a verse that speaks to your current challenge. The more you know His Word, the more boldly you'll live His truth.

    Day 4: You Are Historian

    Reading: Acts 4:23-31; Romans 8:28

Devotional: The early church understood something profound: even the crucifixion of Jesus happened according to God's predetermined plan. They recognized that Herod, Pilate, and the religious rulers were merely pawns in God's sovereign design. This means that nothing in your life catches God by surprise. He is the Master Historian, weaving even painful circumstances into His redemptive story. When persecution came, the disciples didn't pray for its removal—they prayed for boldness to advance through it. What threatens you today? What persecution, opposition, or difficulty makes you want to retreat? Instead of asking God to remove the challenge, ask Him for courage to stand firm within it. Trust that He is writing a story far greater than you can see, and your faithfulness in this chapter matters eternally.

    Day 5: Grant Us Boldness

    Reading: Acts 4:29-31; Ephesians 6:19-20

Devotional: After acknowledging who God is, the early church made one simple request: "Grant us boldness to speak Your word." They didn't ask for comfort, safety, or the removal of threats. They asked for courage to advance the gospel despite opposition. When they prayed, the place shook, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit. Your boldness for Jesus grows when you worship Him, know Him, believe Him, trust Him, and obey Him. This week presents opportunities to share Christ—perhaps at the cross service, perhaps in your neighborhood, perhaps with a coworker. Will you ask God for boldness? The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church. Persecution moves the gospel forward. Don't pray for ease; pray for courage. Then step out in faith, trusting that the same Spirit who shook that room will empower you.

Weekly Challenge: Identify one person this week who needs to hear about Jesus. Pray specifically for boldness, then invite them to church or share your testimony with them. Remember: the greatest source of power available to a Christian is found through prayer.
