Day 1: Looking Backward to Move Forward
Reading: Matthew 9:35-38
Jesus established a pattern for ministry that still applies today: teaching, preaching, and healing. He never stopped working, never quit serving, and always focused on His Father’s mission. When we look backward at Christ’s example, we discover our pattern for moving forward. Like Jesus, we’re called to step out of our comfort zones and into the harvest field. Missionaries who serve in dangerous places and believers who share their faith in hostile environments have looked back to Christ’s courage and found strength to move forward. Today, consider where Jesus is calling you to step beyond comfort. His compassionate, relentless ministry should inspire us to action—not admiration alone.
Day 2: Seeing the Harvest Through Jesus’ Eyes
Reading: Isaiah 53:1-6; John 4:35-38
“All we like sheep have gone astray,” Isaiah reminds us. This isn’t just ancient poetry—it’s the reality of every person we encounter daily. Jesus looked at the crowds and saw harassed and helpless people, like sheep without a shepherd. He saw harvest potential where others saw only problems. The people in your workplace, neighborhood, and favorite restaurant aren’t just faces in a crowd—they’re eternal souls who need Jesus. The harvest truly is plentiful. When you begin seeing people with the “L” of lostness on their foreheads, as Dwight Moody described, your perspective shifts dramatically. Ask God today to give you His eyes to see the harvest around you and His compassion for the lost.
Day 3: The Problem of Too Few Workers
Reading: Luke 10:1-3; Romans 10:13-15
Jesus identified the problem plainly: “The laborers are few.” Two thousand years later, this still hasn’t changed. We have countless spectators but too few workers willing to enter the harvest field. The issue isn’t God’s power or a shortage of lost people—it’s our unwillingness to go. We stay comfortable while the world perishes. The Holy Spirit lives within us, empowering us to speak, yet we often remain silent. Being a “good visual witness” isn’t enough when people need to hear the gospel. Your story matters. Your testimony has power. You don’t need special credentials or training to share what Jesus has done in your life. Today, identify one person you can share your faith story with this week.
Day 4: Praying Earnestly for Workers
Reading: Colossians 4:2-6; Ephesians 6:18-20
Jesus commands us to pray earnestly for the Lord of the harvest to send out workers. This isn’t casual asking—it’s pleading, begging God to move hearts and send laborers. The original language suggests a forceful sending, like picking someone up and thrusting them into service. We often beg people to go, but we should be begging God to call and send. Lottie Moon couldn’t resist God’s call to China. When God truly grips a heart, resistance becomes impossible. Perhaps you’re reading this because God is stirring your heart toward missions—whether across the street or across the world. Spend extended time today praying earnestly for God to raise up workers, and ask whether He is calling you.
Day 5: Your Role in God’s Mission
Reading: Acts 1:8; 2 Corinthians 5:17-21
God has given every believer the ministry of reconciliation. You are His ambassador—His representative in this world. Whether serving in India, North Africa, or Odessa, Texas, the call remains the same: make disciples. Your mission field might be your workplace, your school, or your neighborhood. God wants to use you exactly where you are. The question isn’t whether you’re called to missions—every believer is. The question is where and how. Some give financially, supporting missionaries around the world. Others serve locally, reaching their communities. Still others go to the hardest places on earth. As you conclude this devotional, ask God specifically: “What is my role in Your harvest? Where do You want me to serve? How much do You want me to give?” Then follow His leading with obedience.
